SCUDERIE DEL QUIRINALE, ROMA
Running
Exhibition till June 10th 2008
"(1800s.
From Canova to the Fourth State)"
This
is the first major exhibition dedicated to Italian 19th
century painting, a century during which our country was
conquering the rest of Europe with the likes of Verdi, Puccini,
Rossini, but still wasn't considered to excel culturally.
The over 100 masterpieces to go on show at the Scuderie
del Quirinale show how this century boasted a rich selection
of interesting paintings. Artists such as Appiani, Palagi,
Hayez and representatives of the Milanese Romantic School,
the Macchiaioli (Fattori, Lega, Signorini) in Florence,
the Vedutists of the Posillipo and Morelli School in Naples
created works that were free of classical restrictions and
who nourished themselves with ideas from the Risorgimento
and Romanticism. These paintings showed everyday scenes
and highlighted the existential unease of modern man.
Running
Exhibition until March 2nd 2008
"Nostoi.
Capolavori ritrovati"
Piazza del Quirinale, ROMA
The
word "Nostos" in Greek signifies return. War heroes
and art works are on show in the Gallery of Pope Alessandro
VII. Stolen and removed from their original setting by unscrupulous
merchants and then sold to museums around the world, these
works have returned to Italy thanks to the collaborative
efforts of the Carabinieri, the Judiciary and the Ministry
for the Arts. Louis Godard is the curator of this show that
contains pieces like Vibia Sabina, the Calyx Crater by Assteas,
Antefix with Silene and dancing Menades made out of terracotta.
Running
Exhibition till January 27th 2008
"Pop
Art! 1956 - 1968"
Walter
Guadagnini is the curator of the biggest exhibition to date
dedicated to Pop Art, a cultural and artistic movement that
represented the West through unforgettable images such as
the Marilyn silk-screens by Andy Warhol and the Coca Cola
logo. The show is divided into four sections: the first
is dedicated to the object as merchandise, its essence rendered
and summarised in the logo; the second section focuses on
the stars and personalities of the time, such as astronauts
Joe Tilson and Derek Boshier; the third section is dedicated
to communication channels and forms of expression of popular
culture such as the cartoon; the fourth is about sex and
the body as an erotic entity. Pop art is art that collides
– inevitably – with mass media; it offers a
document of society and of the spirit that pervaded the
era.
Running
Exhibition till September 2nd 2007
